Michele ~ A Vision Board Story

michele-pic-2

I am a big believer in vision boards and try and do one every year.  I think they really have helped me to get clear on my goals and stay focused.  I usually create one with pictures on poster board, take a picture of it and then use it as a screen saver on my phone so that I see it many times daily.  It really is a great reminder of what I want to stay focused on.

Susan ~ A Vision Board Story

My Franklin Planner was my first vision board.  It was portable and went with me everywhere.  I was living in New York at the time.  The first two pages were plastic inserts that held 12 photos.  It had pictures of Kauai with all of its lush greenery, beautiful mountains and gorgeous ocean.  As well as pictures of what my office looked like with a teak desk.

I looked at these images throughout each day and FELT them.  I pictured myself IN them until I was feeling them in real life.

I lived in Hawaii for 5 years – 3 years in Kauai and 2 in Maui.  The photo above is from my health club on Kauai (where Pierce Brosnan worked out).  It had lovely ocean and mountain facing views.  And, I got the teak desk too!

Tracy ~ A Vision Board Story

_mg_3250-640x427

In late 2008 I created a different kind of Vision Board.  It was a very specific board created for a very specific outcome.  It was all about the birth of my 2nd child, the one I was carrying at the time.  I filled the board with pictures of all that I desired the second time around.  Sleeping babies and mothers, happy babies and mothers, healthy babies and mothers, and more importantly, positive affirmations and messages about the natural birth I so desired. I even included the name of the doctor, my doulas and the desired due date.

I created this board to heal from my first birth.  The birth of my son, my first born, shook me to the core.  Read about his Grand Entrance here.

I was a prime candidate, they said, for uterine rupture if I attempted a natural birth.  The doctors, the data, the caring friends and family, all urged me to schedule another c-section.  I took all of these facts and listened to the Truth inside of me.  Despite my fear, I did it anyway.  I listened to the still, small voice inside of me, created a Vision Board and studied it intently for months.  Morning, noon and night until the day came – January 14, 2009.

My baby girl was born naturally, drug free, in 4 hours from first contraction to birth.  It was beautiful, healing and empowering.  I owe it all to my Vision Board, my doulas and my husband who believed I could.  xo

New Year New Vision Board

dsc_0017-640x427-2

The days of creating New Year’s Resolutions are over for me.  I spent so many years creating them and then being completely disappointed in my failure to follow through with what I thought I wanted.

Now, I create a yearly Vision Board.

The Vision Board is a daily reminder of my intentions.  A visual reminder of what I truly desire in my life.    It is less about things and more about creation.  What I want to create for myself and my family.

I still include things in my board.  But, they are more of a marker rather than filling a hole as they were in the past.

They remind me:

That I am on the right track.

That I am living my life by choice.

That I am a powerful force in my life.

A true Vision Board is not a craft project.  It’s not a cut and paste activity although I’ve seen some delightful Vision Board creations.  Some true works of art.

It’s much, much more.  A Vision Board, created with inner inquiry and intention, is a powerful tool in creating what we truly desire.  It’s a decision to live life by design rather than by the default mode we may have been used to up until now.

Good News!  I am holding a Vision Board Workshop in Raleigh, on January 21, 2017!  Join us for a full day immersion including a mini workshop, coaching, inner inquiry and sharing with 11 other powerful creators in a room full of creative energy.  Oh yeah, and a delicious boxed lunch from Catering Works!  Sign up now as there are only 12 seats and they will fill up fast.

Here’s to 2017!  The best year of your life!

Reflection

img_7068-640x480

At the end of every year I like to get out my calendar, my journal and a pen.  To take a close look at the events that unfolded and reflect.  Without judgement.  Without contempt.  Without remorse.  I take a good look at it all.

Years before, I would have written down all that I perceived as “bad” and burned it to get it as far away from me as possible.  And, hold on tight to the wins (if I could find any).  Now, I carefully tie it all together and celebrate.

All of the wins big and small.

All of the wonderful opportunities for growth.

The gift of choice in every moment.

I celebrate it all with a grateful heart.  Get a good glimpse of the past year in the rear view mirror of my mind.  Thanking my “younger” self for all the choices I made last year to get me where I am today.

If there is one thing I have learned since breaking my life apart almost 5 years ago, it is this.  I get to choose how I will interpret my circumstances.  I get to choose how I will respond.  I get to choose joy over any other emotion.  I get to choose to celebrate all that transpired, let it move through me and then let it go.  NOW is all that matters.

So…get out your calendar from 2016, a pen and your journal. Take a close look at the events that unfolded.  Journal it out.  Do a mind-dump.  Then, find the good in each circumstance.  Find the hidden blessings.  Rewrite last year’s story with compassion for the woman who experienced those circumstances and thank her for where she is today.

Practice Makes Progress

grass-eye-level-brett-banta-dreamstime-640x428

Remember the old saying “practice makes perfect”?  We were told this when we were kids.  When things seemed hard.  When we wanted to be the best at something we just started.  We were told that if we practice relentlessly, we would eventually master what we were facing.

I absolutely believe in practice but have come to terms with the word perfect.  I prefer to say perfectly imperfect.  The perfect part of us is our soul.  The very depth of our being.  The imperfection comes from our humanness.  There is nothing perfect about being human.  We are made to fall and stumble.  It is how we learn.

Now, I am more prone to say Practice Makes Progress.  Ahhh!  That feels better.  We don’t have to strive for perfection as there is no such thing in this human form.  We can instead strive for progress.  Progress is what we are meant to do on this Earth.  To grow.  To change.  To morph into the next version of ourselves.

When we start to go down the old road of “practice makes perfect” we can remember that we are shifting into the next version of ourselves.   By acknowledging our progress we are going with the flow of life instead of swimming upstream against the current of perfection.  Life is continually seeking to express itself through us.  It is why we strive to be more, do more, have more.  Not for perfection but for progress.

So, we can learn to celebrate our victories, no matter how trivial they may seem.  We can turn any “stumbling blocks” we may encounter into stepping stones.

We can celebrate our progress.

We can celebrate our imperfections.

We can celebrate our humanness.

How will you celebrate today?

Remember Your Brilliance

photo-1429277005502-eed8e872fe52-640x427

Do you know how incredible you are?  Have you ever really thought about how much you have to offer?  About all of the ways that you rock?

We are often so blinded by the circumstances of our lives that we forget who we are.  As if amnesia has set in.  One disappointment.  One negative comment.  Can send us into a downward spiral of victim hood or low self-esteem.  We believe that we don’t have what it takes to pursue our heart’s desire.

The Truth is that you are capable of far more than you know.  There is not one person on Earth who is exactly like you.  Your experiences, your genes, your desires, your talents.  They are all woven together into an intricate, unrepeatable arrangement called YOU.

Guess what!  You have assets.  They may be hidden but they are there.  But, you can’t use your assets until you are aware of them, until you bring them to the surface and let them shine like a brilliant gem.

I’ve created a worksheet that I call Remember Your Brilliance. To help you create our own personal asset list.  This is different than creating a resume.  You are calling forth a full spectrum of assets.  Brilliance in all areas of life.

At first, it may seem like the list is coming out as a trickle, but as you delve deeper, going deep into your memory bank, you will be in awe at what comes forth.  The prompts will help you let it flow.

This simple practice will build confidence and self-esteem.  Remind you of all the ways you rock.  Let it support you in building your dream, in letting your light shine.

Ask yourself:  What can I do with what I have?

You have something unique and beautiful to offer the world.  You are capable of far more than you’ve ever imagined.  It’s time to share it.

Winding Up

Old watch

As we near the end of the year, the temptation is to wind down, go into hibernation, take a long winter snooze.  To spend these last few weeks getting ready for the holidays and then crashing until February or March.

This year, instead of winding down, I am choosing to Wind Up.

I’ll be:

Winding Up my awareness

Winding Up my goals

Winding Up activity

Winding Up for the mountains I will move in 2017

I am recharging now rather than in January when everyone else is resting.  Gaining momentum now instead of losing steam.  Creating my life now instead of getting started in the New Year.

I’ll be getting really clear about what I want so I can design a year I love.  I’ll be taking note (without judgement) of the lessons learned in 2016.  I’ll be using these notes to guide me in making 2017 my best year yet.  I’ll be asking myself these 3 important questions:

What was I doing?

What worked?

What didn’t?

Time is precious.  What will you do with yours?

I AM creating a life I love.

A Laughing Matter

Mother and son

Have you laughed lately?  I mean a good, hearty belly laugh?

It is said that a child laughs nearly 300 times per day while the average adult laughs less than 20.  Whether this is accurate I’m not sure but I wouldn’t doubt it based on the hysterics I witness with my own children.

They laugh.  All day.  Even when they are trying not to in between fat, crocodile tears.  And, especially, when someone says BUT (have you ever wondered how many times you say that word in a day?).

All jokes aside, research shows that laughter is the best medicine.  It has both short term and long term positive effects on stress, the leading cause of chronic health problems in the US.  In fact, Norman Cousins, author of Anatomy of an Illness, experimented with laughter himself and claimed that 10 minutes of belly laughing gave him two hours of pain free sleep.

*Laughing is a natural state changer.  Have you ever tried a frown while laughing?  Try it.  I bet it will make you laugh.

*Laughing increases the intake of oxygen into the heart and lungs.  There is even a form of yoga called Laughter Yoga.  It’s a hoot!

*Laughing brings us back to the present moment.  We can only laugh in the present.  And, this is good news because we only have NOW.

What is your favorite way to get a laugh in?  Watching a funny movie?  Reading a funny book?  Watching your cat try to make her way out of a paper bag?  Or, maybe it’s laughing for the sake of laughing…

Abundance

dsc_0230-640x427

It is so easy to fall into the appearance of lack.  When we focus on lack, that is exactly what we will see.  We will find every example of what is lacking in our lives and the world.

Lack of money.

Lack of time.

Lack of freedom to do what we truly desire.

It is just as easy to focus on abundance.  In fact, it may be even easier to focus on abundance than on lack.  All we need to do is step out into nature.  There is abundance all around us.

Just the other day my daughter and I were driving through the city and saw literally hundreds of birds sitting on rows of wires above the street.  Each in its own spot.  Chirping to its own tune.  Waiting for some unheard cue to move on to the next set of wires or fortunate tree.

What a blessing.  This thing called life.  It continues regardless of our circumstances.  Grass continues to grow, bunnies continue to multiply, hundreds of birds continue to migrate in unison from north to south each fall and spring.

Try this when you start going down the rabbit hole of lack

Stop.

Take a breath of life.

Be grateful.

Get outside.  Look for the abundance that surrounds you.  Take note of all that you have and you will begin to see more examples of the abundance in your life.
