The Sun Always Shines

sunset

When the sky is dark and stormy, it is hard to remember that the sun always shines.  We know this to be true, but sometimes it feels as if the sun will never come out.

While the last hurricane was stirring up the southeast, all we could see outside was the debris flying, the trees falling and the creeks rising.  The next day, after the storm was over, the sky seemed to be the bluest and the sun the brightest it had ever been.  It was a magnificent day.  But the reality is that the sun was always shining and the sky was always blue.  It was just hidden behind the dark clouds.

There are moments like that in each of our lives.  As if the dark clouds of our circumstances will never shift and we will never see the light of day.  But, just as the sun always shines behind the stormy sky, our true and shining self is always there, behind the circumstances, calmly awaiting our choice to see the light.

It may feel very real, like we are bound by the dark clouds of our circumstances.  The truth is that we bind ourselves to the dark clouds.  We have choice in every moment.  To shift our thinking and choose to see the light.  Think of the power in that.

3 Simple Secrets to Seeing the Light:

*Breathe baby breathe  Breath is a powerful function.  It is both voluntary and involuntary.  It can be used to energize or it can be used to calm.  However you use it, it will always bring you back to NOW.  To the present moment.

*A Grateful Heart  Seek abundance and you shall find it.  Start a gratitude journal.  Make a point every day to find 3 things you are grateful for.  You will begin to see an abundance of beauty in the world when you are looking for it.

*Shifting Perception  It is unrealistic to move straight from anger to joy but you can choose to make small shifts in your perception.  You can choose to think:

I AM shifting into peace.  I AM shifting into health.  I AM shifting into greatness.

This is what it looks like when it is all working out.

Slight shifts in our thinking can completely change the trajectory of our lives.  One thought at a time.

A Dolphin Inspires

lloyd-luecke-bottlenose-dolphin-dreamstime-stock-photos-640x427

I have always had an affinity for dolphin.  I look for them as I walk the beach, fly over the water, cruise out to the deep sea.  8 out of 10 times I see them on my sacred walks on the beach.  This may be because I am an avid beach walker or because I am always looking.  I’m not sure but I am grateful every time.

Years ago I watched a dolphin breach 15-16 feet out of the water.  No one was around to see this but me.  To this day, I feel that dolphin was giving me a private show, saying hello and a thank you for being there.

A few years ago we watched the movie A Dolphin Tale, about a dolphin named Winter with a prosthetic tail.  I knew I had to meet her so I took my family to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Clearwater, FL over spring break to do just that.

Winter’s is a story of sheer willpower, determination and perseverance.  She is alive today because she didn’t know that her chances of survival were near impossible, that a dolphin can’t survive without a tail.  All she knew was the love, dedication and faith of the humans who cared for her.  And, not only did she survive, she thrives.  She touches the hearts and souls of humans daily.

What would you love?

What if you didn’t think it was impossible?

What would you do?

What if you kept a corner of your mind open to the possibility?

Would you live your life differently?

Creating Time

engageappeal-dreamstime-640x403

Sometimes I feel as if I am in constant motion.  My body, my mouth, my mind.

Moving.

Moving.

Moving.

Waking my children (sometimes 5 times), breakfast, morning chores, moving everyone out the door for school, going to work, returning to school for pick up, activities, homework, dinner, bathing and bedtime.  And that doesn’t include the unexpected.  At the end of the day, if I don’t take the time for self-care, I collapse in bed only to do the same thing again the next day.

I have found that the most important time in my day is the ME time I give myself.  Through a lot of trial and error I have found 3 key ways to create more time in the day:

  1. Rise and Shine.

Are you constantly searching for more hours in the day?  Good news!  You can find instant hours, any number you’d like, in the wee hours before your family wakes.

Getting up before your family may sound like an impossible feat.  But, I promise, you can do this too and you will wonder why it took you so long.  Luxuriate in a morning ritual created just for you.

  1. Use Your Calendar.

Schedule your big rocks, the most important activities, first and fill in the spaces with other activities.  Self-care is a big rock.  It is more important than anything else on your schedule.  You cannot give from an empty vessel…

Take 10 minutes at the end of the day to review your calendar and schedule anything that needs to be done so it doesn’t sit in your mind and keep you awake at night.

  1. Go to bed.

As much as you would like to stay up and watch mindless tv some nights, make a commitment to yourself.  Get to bed in time to give yourself 7-8 hours of sleep.  Sleep is one of the best ways to fill your cup and a good night sleep will be incredibly helpful in getting up before the rest of the household does in the morning.

Create a new evening ritual.  Before turning out the lights for the night, take the time to unwind, reflect on your day, read and/or write in a journal.

I bet you never knew you could Create Time!

Possibility

sunset-640x478

Do you remember when you were young?   When you used your imagination to try on possible futures?

Maybe you were belting out your favorite song to thousands of fans.

Maybe you were bouncing across the surface of the moon.

Maybe you were flying high above the fields watching the sunset.

There was a time when we let our imaginations run wild with possibility.  We stepped into different imaginary lives.  We lived inside those lives, testing them out, returning to the ones that felt right and discarding the ones that didn’t.

Over time, though, we were trained in a way of being called condition based thinking where we let our 5 senses and our circumstances determine what we can and cannot do in life.  We let our checkbook, our calendar, our families and our circumstances rule.

We looked to those conditions because we were trained to.  We were told to straighten up and stop day dreaming.  Learn these facts.  Eventually, our dreams were stunted, squashed, left as distant memories.

But, what if, just for a moment, you allowed yourself to explore possibility?  To dream.  To listen to that deepest part of you that has been vying for your attention through your longings and discontent?

What if it was not impossible?  What if age, sex, time, money, circumstances didn’t matter?

What would you do?

What would you be?

What would you give?

What would you create?

What would you love?

The possibilities are endless…
